DNS explained: what beginners need to know

2 min read

If you own or manage a website, you’ve probably come across the term DNS. But what exactly is it, and why is it important? Let’s break it down!

What Is DNS and why does it matter?

DNS (Domain Name System) is essential for making websites and email services work. It translates easy-to-remember domain names into IP addresses that computers understand. Without Domain Name System, navigating the internet would be much harder.

How does DNS work?

Ever wondered what happens when you type a website address into your browser? Here’s a simple breakdown:

  1. Your browser sends a request to a DNS resolver (usually provided by your internet provider or a public DNS service like Google or Cloudflare).
  2. Then, the resolver checks its records for the IP address linked to the domain. If it doesn’t have it, it queries other DNS servers.
  3. After that, once the correct IP address is found, it’s sent back to your browser.
  4. Finally, your browser connects to the web server, and the website loads.
What are the key DNS terms you should know?

Domain Name – The human-friendly name of a website (e.g., google.com).

IP Address? – A unique numerical address that identifies a device on the internet.

DNS Record? – Information stored in Domain Name System that directs internet traffic. Some key types include:

  • A record – Maps a domain to an IP address.
  • CNAME record – Points one domain to another.
  • MX record – Directs emails to the correct mail server.

What is a Nameserver? – A special server that stores and manages DNS records.

How can you manage your DNS settings?

At Network Dynamics, all hosting plans and newly registered domains are set up with our Nameservers by default. You can easily manage your Domain Name System settings from your hosting account.

Why should you understand Domain Name System?

Having a basic understanding of Domain Name System helps you troubleshoot website and email issues, manage your domain settings, and ensure your website runs smoothly.
